Tokyo Conference, held on July 8, 2012, brought together delegates from 70 different countries to review the achievements of Afghan Government since 2001 and to assess measures that need to be taken to help Afghanistan stand on its own feet.
The Tokyo Declaration aimed to secure aid commitments for Afghanistan in the years up to 2014, when most foreign troops will withdraw from the country, and to chart a course for assistance beyond then as donors seek to prevent a country still mired in insurgent war from slipping back into greater poverty and chaos.
The conditional USD 16bn pledged by the international community at the conference requires Afghanistan to build up safeguards against the endemic corruption in the country.
