33 million of the outstanding bills have been recently paid by border police, education department, public health and police headquarters.
Due to the payment delays, development activities of the department have halted as well.
“Due to the institutions’ failure to settle the outstanding amounts, the department could not repair the Duranta dam,”said director of energy and water Mohibur Rahman Momand.
Duranta dam, built 47 years ago, has a crack that needs to be fixed soon, as there are fears that the dam might collapse.
Momand warnted that the international community must help the department to clear their arrears.
Three turbines for the dam, costing USD 10 million, were reconstructed with collaboration from the USAID and another USD 20 million was needed to complete the repairs works.
Nangarhar Deputy Government Mohamad Hanif Gardiwal confirmed the problem and has ordered all departments to clear their outstanding power bills.
