Embezzlement in Reconstruction Funds for Zherai district, southern Kandahar

Niaz Mohammad Sarhadi, the district’s administrative head, complained about the fraud committed in funds allocated for the reconstruction projects in Zehrai district of southerin Kandahar.

Sarhadi said the district had heavily suffered over the past 34 years. Funds that flew in for rebuilding the town “ended up in the pockets of a few individuals”.

A lot of money had been spent on the construction of two schools and a health centre in Kandiali and Pashmol areas, but the quality of the projects was far from satisfactory, the district chief complained.

Sarhadi accused a former USD Army captain, an Afghan army commander and some residents of pocketing the money allocated for rebuilding water channels in Pashmol.

According to Sarhadi’s statement, USD 250,000 had been spent on the construction of police check-posts. However, the police force lacked proper equipment to provide security for the district. He called for strengthening and equipping the local police force.
