Afghanistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Union said that the second round of negotiations on preparing the document for Strategic Partnership between the two sides was successful.
It is not yet clear when the final document will be signed.
The second round of negotiations commenced in Kabul on Thursday.
According to the EU’s ambassador to Kabul, Vygaudas Usackas, the third round of negotiations is expected to take place in October.
“The third round of negotiations on the issue of partnership is very important for us and will discuss it with the 27 members of the EU. It is a complicated and comprehensive document. It will certainly take a longer time to be completed,” said the ambassador.
Good governance, reconstruction, training of Afghan forces, human rights and economic assistance are matters that will be discussed in the document.
The document will have to seek approval from the Afghan parliament after its completion.
“The agreement will be valid for 10 years. We hope to soon have the document signed, which will encompass aspects of both Afghanistan and EU,” said Faramez Tamana Deputy Spokesperson to the Ministry.
Afghan government considers strategic partnership agreements between America, India, France, Britain, NATO, Germany and EU as the biggest achievements of the country.
The mentioned nations have made many commitments to Afghanistan on the agreement documents. And, Afghanistan has promised commitments in return as well.
Good governance, combating corruption, respect for human rights and women rights are some of the commitments from Afghanistan’s side.
